Our History & Philosophy

History of North Shore Nursery School

North Shore Nursery School is a non-profit cooperative school founded in 1961. Originally housed in the Unitarian Universalist Church, the school moved into the Community Reformed Church of Manhasset in June of 1993. In 1991, we became one of the first schools on Long Island to achieve accreditation from the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). In 2003, we introduced a nondenominational Christian Education component to our curriculum.

In 2015, in order to meet the changing needs of our community, we have become a coop-optional school. This allows our parents to be as involved as they choose, while removing many of the traditional coop requirements. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s classroom and be involved through board and committee positions, however neither is required. The coop allows parents to have input in their child’s early education and share their preschool school experience first hand.

We are chartered by the Department of Education and hold a Certificate of Voluntary Registration from the State of New York. All of our head teachers are NYS certified. Our staff is experienced, mature and most of all committed to meeting the needs of all our children. We are dedicated to promoting the highest quality in early childhood education.

We admit students of any race, color, creed and national or ethnic origin.

Our Philosophy

At North Shore Nursery School an atmosphere is provided where children can grow in a loving and nurturing environment. We are dedicated to developing each child’s social, emotional, educational and spiritual growth. An abundance of creative materials and age-appropriate experiences are provided to foster cognitive as well as social skills. Children learn to feel good about themselves, to work with peers, to accept limits and to develop positive attitudes toward the school experience. Through hands on activities, and the learning through play model, children develop a life-long love of learning.

Children learn that God loves them. They are taught to appreciate the similarities and differences in all of God’s children regardless of race, creed, gender or physical ability. Caring, kindness and compassion for each other and all those around us are modeled and reinforced on a daily basis. Children learn to appreciate themselves and the wonders of the world around them as creations of God.

The cooperative aspect of our school is a special one. Through active participation by our parents, children more easily bridge the gap between home and school. The individual needs of our students are met as parents have the opportunity to work closely with our highly experienced teachers.

North Shore Nursery School is dedicated to serving the children and families of our community by nurturing children who are loving and caring, who are also confident and prepared for success.
